Security Guard Training Requirements

Section 89-G of Article 7A requires all persons engaged in security guard activities be registered with the New York Department of State (DOS), and complete all training at schools approved by the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). The following training courses are required:

Security Guard (Unarmed)


Initial Training Requirements: 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training - A general introductory course. You must complete this course and submit a copy of the certificate issued to you with your security guard application.

16-Hour On-The-Job Training (OJT) - A course relevant to the duties of guards, requirements of the work site, and the needs of the employer. You must complete this training within 90 days of employment as a security guard. Annual Training Requirement: 8-Hour In-Service Training - This course must be completed each year you hold a security guard registration. Your registration is issued for two years, therefore, you must complete two (2) In-Service training courses prior to your registration expiration to be eligible for renewal.




Armed Security Guard


Initial Training Requirements: 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training - A general introductory course. You must complete this course and submit a copy of the certificate issued to you with your security guard application.

16-Hour On-The-Job Training (OJT) - A course relevant to the duties of guards, requirements of the work site, and the needs of the employer. You must complete this training within 90 days of employment as a security guard.

47-Hour Firearms Training - You must possess a valid NYS Pistol Permit and security guard registration to enroll in this course. Upon successful completion of this course, submit a copy of the certificate with your application for an armed guard registration upgrade. Annual Training Requirements: 8-Hour In-Service Training - This course must be completed each year you hold a security guard registration. Your registration is issued for two years, therefore, you must complete two (2) In-Service training courses prior to your registration expiration to be eligible for renewal.

8-Hour Annual Firearms Training - This course must also be completed each calendar year you hold an armed security guard registration. Your registration is issued for two years, therefore, you must complete two 8 Hour Annual Firearms training courses within your registration effective and expiration dates to be eligible for renewal.

Do I need a license to work as a Security Guard with Johnson Security Bureau?


Yes. In order to work as a guard of officer at JSB you will need a Valid, Unexpired Security Guard license, backed by your 8-hour and 16-hour course certificates and all required training for your desired position. How much does it cost to obtain a Security Guard License in New York?


There is a $25 initial application fee and a $102 fingerprinting fee, paid to NYS. This fee is NOT paid to or by Johnson Security Bureau. When you pay the fees to the State, it must be in the form of mail order, company check, or cashier's check only, and must be made payable to the “NYS Department of State.” The NYS office does not accept personal checks, credit cards, or cash for licensing fee payments.




How long does it take to get a Security Guard License in New York?


It takes approximately 21 days from the time you send in your license application to receive your physical license in the mail. How do I renew my Security Guard License in NYC ?


By Mail. A renewal form is mailed to each license-holder 90 days prior to their license expiration date. Guards must renew their registration by the expiration date of their current registration or they cannot work as a security guard.

What certifications are Johnson Security Bureau and its clients currently interested in?


Currently, Johnson Security Bureau is interested in: F-01, S-95, S-60, OSHA 10 (Construction Industry) , TWIC, CPR-A & FIRST AID (list subject to change)




Do I need to purchase my own uniform?


No. Johnson Security Bureau, through our designated uniform vendor, will provide a branded uniform for you at the start of your assignment.




Does Johnson Security Bureau offer Employee Benefits?


Yes. Currently, Johnson Security Bureau provides 401K (deductions after 90-days of employment), Health Coverage, TransitChek at the time of hire. After one year of service, we also offer Paid Sick Time and Paid Vacation.

What can I expect once I apply for a job at Johnson Security Bureau?


After you have completed a job application, our Talent Management team will review your application and contact you by phone of email to inform you of your application status and set up a phone screening or in-person interview, if applicable.




Do I need previous security experience to apply?


No. We offer on-site and classroom training as well as a thorough New Hire Orientation to help assist new employees who are interested in joining our family.




Are there any standards for physical appearance on the job?


Yes. We have high appearance standards for our guards and employees. Johnson Security Bureau officers and guards are expected to be impeccable in manner and dress while on duty, as they serve as the face of our company and our clients.




I am currently in school. Can JSB work with my school schedule?


Yes. If you are currently in school, please provide your school schedule to your hiring or talent manager and we may be able to work around your schedule.




How much time does it take to fill out a JSB application?


It should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete an online application, if you have all your materials readily accessible. You must have an active email address, digital copy of your resume, and a working phone number at the time of application.




How long will it take a Johnson Security Bureau representative to respond to my application?


Our application response time depends on circumstances. Once an application is in our system, we do our best to reach out to each applicant within 2-3 days.




If I am contacted to come in for an interview, what should I be prepared for?


Once our talent management team contacts you to set up an interview, you will receive a Calendar request with the date and time of the interview. We ask that you accept the invitation request so we know that you will be coming in at the specified time.
